How WanderWalk works

London stories that start when your feet reach them

WanderWalk is an iPhone audio guide. Choose a curated walk or start Wander mode, put your phone away, and a short story plays when you come within about 40 metres of the place it describes.

From opening the app to hearing a story

  1. 1

    Tell it what you're into

Pick from 8 categories. Dark history, hidden buildings, the river, whatever pulls you. It uses that to choose which story plays when 2 places compete.

  2. 2

Put your phone away and walk

Pick a curated walk or just turn on free roam. Headphones in, phone in your pocket. When you come within about 40 metres of a story, it starts on its own.

  3. 3

Let one story lead to the next

When a story ends, the app offers the nearest one you have not heard and counts you in. Skip it, replay it, or carry on. London does the rest.

2 modes

Curated walks versus Wander

Both play stories near the real place. The difference is whether you want a route or the freedom to improvise.

Curated walks

Follow an ordered route with one clear historical thread. Each page shows the area, stop count, time and distance before you start.

  • 35 London routes
  • Stops ordered into a deliberate story
  • One complete walk free forever

Wander mode

No fixed route. Wander listens to where you are and surfaces unheard stories nearby, ranked towards the interests you chose.

  • Set a radius around your live location
  • Walk normally; stories trigger within about 40 metres
  • Choose or skip what plays next

Practical answers

Signal, battery and location

Does it work offline?
The first play downloads the audio. Once cached, that story keeps playing through patchy signal. Map tiles still need data when they have not loaded before.
Does it run in the background?
Precise location is used While In Use, not as always-on background tracking. Route and story selection happens mainly on your device.
Do I need to hold my phone?
No. Lock-screen controls, skip-back and playback speed are designed to keep the phone in your pocket while you look at London.

Source-backed

The research trail stays private

Every story is checked against published historical material, but the source packs, fact plans, narration and audio are part of how WanderWalk is made. The website shows what each route covers without publishing the recipe for rebuilding it.
